Yes, there are CSS layouts available/downloadable over the web (just do a search for “CSS layouts” and ye shall find). But not everyone is going to do the same colors, images, fonts, etc as you. So the overall design is what is copyrightable. Just like my weblog: the CSS layout is from Movable Type. But I added two more divs, images, my own words and more.

The entire visual experience created by me—including the CSS layout—is what’s copyrightable. Thus the CSS file is included.

WHAT WORKS ARE PROTECTED?
Copyright protects “original works of authorship” that are fixed in a tangible form of expression. The fixation need not be directly perceptible so long as it may be communicated with the aid of a machine or device. Copyrightable works include the following categories:

2. musical works, including any accompanying words
3. dramatic works, including any accompanying music
4. pantomimes and choreographic works
5. pictorial, graphic, and sculptural works
6. motion pictures and other audiovisual works
7. sound recordings
8. architectural works

These categories should be viewed broadly. For example, computer programs and most “compilations” may be registered as “literary works”; maps and architectural plans may be registered as “pictorial, graphic, and sculptural works.”

WHAT IS NOT PROTECTED BY COPYRIGHT?
Several categories of material are generally not eligible for federal copyright protection. These include among others:

• Works that have not been fixed in a tangible form of expression (for example, choreographic works that have not been notated or recorded, or improvisational speeches or performances that have not been written or recorded)
• Titles, names, short phrases, and slogans; familiar symbols or designs; mere variations of typographic ornamentation, lettering, or coloring; mere listings of ingredients or contents
• Ideas, procedures, methods, systems, processes, concepts, principles, discoveries, or devices, as distinguished from a description, explanation, or illustration
• Works consisting entirely of information that is common property and containing no original authorship (for example: standard calendars, height and weight charts, tape measures and rulers, and lists or tables taken from public documents or other common sources)

It sux how you have to make it work, but there you go. The article linked in Slashdot is getting /.ed (a phenomenon created where any article posted in Slashdot receives so much incoming traffic that the linked site slows down significantly or goes down as a result).

So my idea is to have a hard drive in my head (yes, in my head) that I can insert knowledge into. So if I want to learn how to sew? Insert ”Sewing for Dummies” into my HEAD! YEAH!! …. I need chocolate…..scatch that, I need a nap….

First create a folder, then put aliases in it to your fave programs (btw: an alias is like a shortcut in Windows). Then make an alias of that folder and place that folder in your dock by the trash can. When you click and hold on them, the folder contents open up in a small menu.

Anyways, I found three at this one store on State & by Madison called Forever 21. While shopping at H&M, I asked the workers there if they had any and one cashier pointed me to Forever 21. I was so happy that I found inexpensive ponchos that I almost cried. Sure they’re not the best quality but who cares! I’m happy and that’s all that matters.

In other news I saw the movie Kill Bill (volume I) yesterday. Man, was it bloody! But it was good—in a Japanimation kind of way! I watched it before I went to bed and was wondering why the blood didn’t scare me. I think it was that the whole story drew me in; it was’t about the blood & violence-it was about getting revenge. Wish I could kick ass like that…

BTW: I thought Lucy Liu was hot!

In other news, before I jumped to conclusions I sent everyone at work an email to see if they accidentaly grabbed my free copy of ID Magazine that I got from subscribing. I got the bill and it says “included with your free copy is your invoice.” We’ll see what happens.

oh well, I’ll see how it goes…

1. My man’s going to start helping me practice driving
2. We’re going to sign up for a new credit card that’ll give us no financing charges for one year and after one year it’ll be lower than our current credit card
3. With that finance-free year, we’ll buy me a laptop and him an iPod and both of us a digital camera. That way we can break it down to making payments, instead of paying it all like we’re use to (yeah, we’re semi-responsible)
4. We’re going to vacation in August in Puerto Vallarta, México, hopefully my aunt’ll let us use one of her houses that she rents to the richies who vacation there… Whoot!
