the yarn store got a lotta business that day

A historic building went up in flames yesterday and I was able to snap a few quick pix. It’s the historic Dexter Building on 630 S Wabash Ave. The Orange line was not exiting the Loop so riders had to take the Red line to the Roosevelt stop to transfer to the Orange line.

The Red line was PACKED to the brim with riders so I decided to get off on Harrison and go to Loopy Yarns to look around. Little did I know that this is exactly where the fire was taking place! Across the street from the Harrison exit I could see the building in smoke and fire trucks everywhere! Here are three pix I took with my Razr:

yes, a bowtie

Ok, so at my work we have our usual lunch table topics: drugs, sex, potty humor, or combinations thereof. Yes, we usually end up talking about those three things in some variation or make up new hip words to use around the office. The newest word so far is “dickweed” which is a old insult that has found a new breathe of life in our little world.

Anyways, yesterday we topped all other conversations we’ve ever had with the invention of the “pimped out flasher coat” (that’s what I call it anyway).

Whenever I walk in to work every morning I end up glistening with sweat from the walk when I get to my desk. As it turns out, it’s a good idea to remove your coat when you walk into the building because of the temperature change. Here I thought I was just a fat ass that had no stamina. So Ken* was talking about how he and Wade* were walking in one day and through the revolving door Wade whipped off his coat and put it in his bag. Ken said it was like Superman changing from Clark Kent. I blurted out, “Next thing you know he’s naked.” Wade said, “Yeah, I was wearing my flashing coat.”

Everyone laughed, then Wade held up his hands to his ribs said, “It’s like this short though so I don’t know why people aren’t shocked when I flash them.” And this is where the conversation went on a crazy tangent. Molly* suggested that he get a stiffy that’s timed with the opening of the flashing coat. Well, this would be difficult to achieve multiple times. Then Molly suggested tying a string to Mr. Happy Pants so it’s lifted upon the opening of the flashing coat. We all quiped in with further suggestions each one topping the next…

the string also has a bell on it so Mr. Happy Pants jingles too

a spotlight on the inside of the coat to shine down on it

then glitter comes out from the back in a shimmer effect

a white dove flies out

an angelic chorus sings “AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH”

and Mr. Happy Pants is wearing a bow tie

I laughed so hard my stomach muscles were hurting and I had tears in my eyes.

* names have been changed to protect the dirty.

I’m getting better as I get older. But isn’t that everyone? You get wiser, gain life experience… and have more money to spend on all the stuff you need to look better. Tummy-tuck here I come!

No, I couldn’t do that to myself. I’d rather get my jaw fixed. Oh! You didn’t know? My lower jaw is a tad underdeveloped so I need surgury to have my lower jaw moved foward. No biggie—but I don’t think we have the money to do it. Actually, I don’t know if the insurance would cover all of it or not. Eh. So my jaw pops sometimes and sometimes I have tension headaches. It’s a slice of life, huh?

I’ve trained myself to compensate by jutting out my chin a touch and most people don’t notice. Unless I eat in front of people and have food fall outta my mouth. Yeah, good times!

Right now, I’m jammin’ to Tijuana No’s “Pobre de Ti”. I’ve found a lot of new Spanish Rock music that I love, now I only have to find a record store where I can buy them that’s convenient for me to get to.

In other news, I found a site that has O’Reilly books online on Web Design. I remember visiting this site long time ago then it was taken down for some reasons, so take time to visit while u can.

As a decent web designer, you should have all these books; of course I don’t have all these books myself, but I never said I was decent.

Well, I actually just read the RedEye which those of us in Chicago now it offers diluted news for the young “I’m-too-busy-to-read-a-real-newspaper”. Anyways, I read a few news items and realized, we’re going to be the cause of our own demise—translation: we’re all going to kill each other cuz we’re all just dumb asses! Dammit! It all makes me so angry!!

In other news, I  Spanish Rock music. If I didn’t have that, I think I’d go insane O_o I’m thinking of making myself some cute t’s for the summer with sayings. I’m a creative person, I think I can come up with some oddball stuff. Definitely going to make one that says, “Rockera” in glitter. Yes, glitter! Don’t roll your eyes at me!!

Now, I have to go and make a backup of my Movable Type database and my website cuz I haven’t done it in a while and that’s exactly when the whole shit hits the fan and you loose all your work.

I know there’s a cron job & script file somewhere’s on my hosting site’s forum where it makes a backup by itself and emails u the tar file but I ain’t that sophisti-ma-cated to figure it all out.
The firm I intern for…

The firm I intern for let me know that we’re going to completely redesign the firm’s website this spring. After my talk with the new Director, we talked about using XML to store info and dynamically update many webpages at once.

Sounds like an idea I can get onboard with. Now I’m off to learn me some XML.

So I finished flowing copy…

So I finished flowing copy and images into a website for work—actually for a client that hired the company I work for. And let me tell you, the chick promised her bosses we’d have the site done by the end of the year and we’re over here running around with like a million infinitesimal changes.

It was a lot of lining things up right and switching images and making all the ® marks superscript. So anyways they actually put the site up live before even looking at it themselves. Then they hadda take the forms out cuz what my supervisor used for the form post method. Don’t ask me tho, cuz I don’t know any asp.

Is that how you spell…

Is that how you spell spilt? Anyway, this morning I bought a nice French Vanilla coffee in a 20oz cup from 7/11 before I caught the bus. And while on the train—somewhere between Kedzie & Ashland—my coffee was knocked over by my schoolbag & sent down to the floor. Dammit!

I was only slightly embarrased but I was more upset cuz now I had no more coffee & no paper to read. I threw down my paper to soak up the spill and used my napkins to wipe off coffee from my shoes.

This isn’t the biggest problem I’ve faced today so far…

What’s happening now is that here at work I use Mac OSX and there’s a feature in it that allows you to ftp to a server [Go > Connect to Server ...] without using an ftp client like Fetch. Well, I can connect alright but can’t write to the server. It’s like locked or something.

Meanwhile my trial copy of Fetch has expired and I’m stuck waiting like 5 minutes for it to start cuz “I’ll-enter-the-serial-number-next-time-I-swear” button takes forever to activate.

In other news: the Earth opened up today and swallowed a young woman by the name of Zulema Ortiz because God wanted to put her out of her misery. :p
